In celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I created a coloring sheet for kids (and adults that love to color too!). The coloring sheet that I designed and created also has his famous quote ” I Have A Dream”. A picture that was drawn by me of the Lincoln Memorial where he conducted this famous speech is also present on this sheet. I also included the words “Civil Rights” as a reminder of what he was fighting for and still continues today.
My 3 year old and I spent some time coloring the sheet together (see video below). I did more of the coloring part while he created green circles on the page. He is learning to draw circles so he was very proud of his work. While we were coloring, we discussed a little of the life and legacy and Dr. King.
A great picture book to read is BE A KING by Carole Boston Weatherford and Illustrated by James E. Ransome. This beautiful picture books discusses how you can be like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr by upholding his practices and principles in your daily life. It is a very inspirational and aspirational book that is wonderful for children.
Another picture book that discusses the achievement of Dr. King is MEMPHIS, MARTIN, and the MOUNTAINTOP by Alice Faye Duncan and Illustrated by R. Gregory Christie. This book follows Lorraine Jackson, a 9 year old who is the daughter of Sanitation worker that is in the middle of the 1968 Sanitation Strike. The story is crafted together by poems and prose that weave together the complete history of the this pivotal moment in the Civil Rights movement.
