March is Women’s History Month and to celebrate I bought the wonderful book, LATINITAS: Celebrating 40 Big Dreamers by Juliet Menéndez.
My little latinita was excited to get a book that celebrated Latinas like her and had even more fun reading some words in Spanish and Portuguese. The book is primarily written in English but it is sprinkled with some Spanish/Portuguese words. I loved that about it.
It was a great way to slowly introduce my daughter to reading in Spanish, which has started to be my focus with her reading. She reads very well in English thus far so I am trying to build her (and mine) vocabulary in Spanish, so reading is the wonderful way to do that.
Latinitas: Celebrating 40 Big Dreamers is a compilation book that honors Latina’s that have changed the world. Each page is a biographical history of an amazing Latina and her contributions to the world around her. Each Latina is represented with a beautiful illustration by Juliet Menéndez.
The book provides information on Latina’s ranging from the sciences, arts, sports, and so much more. There is a wealth of information in this book that is perfect for any history and world history curriculum.
It is also a springboard for all schools to add to their Hispanic History Month curriculum. You can do lots of activities based on the amazing women in this book.
After reading about these heroes, you will definitely run to google and look up more information if you are not as well versed with these dope Latinas like me. I did just this after reading about Antonia Navarro. Antonia Navarro was born and raising in El Salvador in the late 1800s.
She would go on to defy the norms and become the first woman to graduate from college in all of Central America and that was not even her most fascinating accomplishments. Make sure to pick up the book here to find out more.
I would highly recommend this book. These women made amazing contributions and should be highlighted by everyone.
Check out a sneak peak inside the book below and snippet of my daughter reading about a Brazilian soccer player.
Thank you for reading!
Enjoy!
