Science + Art = A Beautiful Mess

Sensory play, science, toddler science, learn through play

So… I am completely a Science Geek šŸ¤“ (and proud lol!) and that means I get really excited about all things science…especially science EXPERIMENTS! But with a 2 year old and an infant, I really can’t perform many elaborate experiments (aka dangerous lol šŸ˜) but that does not stop me from introducing the basics. Ā Basically, anything that Ā involves mixing or making a mess is an awesome time for my 2 year old. So,Ā I just wanted to share a quick science-y way to keep a little one entertained for a bit that ends with a beautiful piece of ART!

Supplies

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Food Coloring
  • Towel/tray (optional, but great mess control lol)
  • White cardstock

Directions

  • Add food color the each ingredients (salt, sugar, baking soda, and vinegar). We picked red this time.

  • Mix all of the ingredients (salt, sugar, baking soda, and vinegar) with the hydrogen peroxide. There is no reaction, but its all about mixing, right?
  • The hydrogen peroxide makes a goopy mix with the either the salt, sugar, or baking soda. Use this for finger painting!!

Grand finale…. Mix the vinegar & baking sodaĀ

Did you do the grand finale? Trust me, your little one will enjoy it! Ā Our art piece turned out to look this….

And Mom got in on the art action, here is my work

Well, I hope you and your little one will enjoy this activity! My daughter really likes to do science experiments (otherwise make a mess!) Ā and she especially loves to see a “chemical reaction,” so I will have way more science to share!!! If you try this, please let me know how it goes? Its a good way to talk about the senses and texture! Your little one will defintly smell the vinegar and can feel different grain textures with the sugar, salt, and baking soda.

Please share you thoughts here or on myĀ Facebook Page
