Happy New Year! Feliz Año Nuevo! Let’s leap into 2024 with a smile on our face and a great read in hand. I am starting this year with the New York Times bestseller CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE by Tomi Adeyemi.
I have seen this book on my timeline for years and did not think it was for me. The cover intrigued my interest, and I looked it up and found it is considered Young Adult/Fantasy. The book being under the Young Adult (YA) umbrella discouraged me from reading it because well, I’m a grown up and I read grown up sophisticated things lol.
Its destiny that had other plans for my reading journey. I was ordering books off of the Penguin Random House website for my kids and I came across SKIN OF THE SEA by Natasha Bowen. My interested were peaked and without looking at the genre, I added it to cart. I absolutely loved that book and the next book. So, I started looking for all fantasy books with African mythology and alas, here we are.
This will be my third series that has a Black female lead, mythology, and fantasy.
- Skin of the Sea series
- Legendborn series
- Legacy of Orishas

I am only on chapter 3 and I am very captivated by the story. Plus any book that comes with a map, count me in!
What are you reading to begin this year? Let me know in the comments below.
Thank you for reading and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Maya
